EasyBib gives these options for basic citations:

  • Paste a website link
  • Search a book title
  • Paste a video link

The other options (database & journal) will be covered in the Advanced EasyBib lesson.

The key to using EasyBib is to PROOFREAD and refer back to your source to be sure you have completed all of the possible options.

The bibliography is an alphabetized list of all of the sources you consulted for your work.

The formatting of the bibliography will tell your reader if you are a serious researcher or not.

Impress your reader: format your list of sources perfectly.

Bibliography and Works Cited Rules:

  • Alphabetized
  • Size 12 font
  • Same font as the paper
  • Reverse indented
  • Double Spaced
  • No empty rows between entries
  • Title is centered, same font, same font size, not underlined, not bold

What title should you use?

  • Bibliography => a list of sources that will not be cited in the text of your paper.
  • Works Cited => a list of sources that WILL be cited in your paper. (All IB courses must use the title "Works Cited" since all sources must be cited within your papers).

MLA 8 is the latest version of the Modern Language Association style guide.

See a full lesson about MLA 8 HERE.

MLA 8 introduces a new idea about how sources are often nested within each other. This concept is called "Containers."

Containers are the places that are hold or store a source. Citing containers allows us to give credit to the various places providing access to a source.

A citation may give information about multiple containers.

For example:

  • Information from a book - one container: the book
  • Information from a journal, found in a database - two containers: the journal and the database storing the journal
  • Information from a song, on an album, found on Spotify  - three containers: the song, the album, the streaming service (Spotify)

MLA 8 gives the writer some choice about which aspect of a source to emphasis. The aspect that's most important will be the first part of the entry.

For example:

  • Information from a play - highlight the actor, the director, or the playwright?
  • Information from a song - highlight the artist, the sound mixer, or the studio?
  • Information from a film - highlight the director, the actor, or the author of the screenplay?

Oregon Library's citation maker leads you through this thinking process!

Why use it?

More thought = More understanding.

Understand the parts of each source to create a meaningful citation. When you understand the parts and the reason behind the order of them, you are able to "read" citations from others and proofread your own better.

The Instructions (or watch video below)

A Bibliography and Works Cited page is an alphabetized list of all of the sources you consulted for your work.

The formatting of the page tells your reader if you are a serious researcher or not.

Impress your reader: format your list of sources perfectly.

Bibliography and Works Cited Rules:

  • Alphabetized
  • Size 12 font
  • Same font as the paper
  • Reverse indented
  • Double Spaced
  • No empty rows between entries
  • Title is centered, same font, same font size, not underlined, not bold
  • Separate page from the rest of the paper

What's the difference?

Choose the right title:

  • Bibliography = a list of sources that will not be cited in the text of your paper.
  • Works Cited = a list of sources that WILL be cited in your paper. (All IB courses must use the title "Works Cited" since all sources must be cited within your papers).
