Citation Tips for MLA and APA citation for high school and IB students

How do I create a Works Cited page?

The Works Cited page is an alphabetical list of all of the sources you used in your paper. All sources listed must also be cited in your essay.

Follow these steps:

1)  Choose a tool to help you put the information in the right order (see tools below)

2)  For each source, identify the TYPE of resource it is

3)  Choose the resource type that matches your source

4)  Fill in as much information as you can - try to fill in all the blanks

NOTE: Want to skip steps 1-4? Use a database! Just grab the citation given - be sure to choose "MLA"

5)  Paste completed citations into your document & proofread - be sure duplication and all-caps are eliminated

6)  Alphabetize the list

7)  Reverse indent (see video for help)

REMEMBER: Every item on your Works Cited page MUST be actually cited within your essay. The literal meaning of "Works Cited" is, "Here are the works I've cited in my paper."

How do I format a Works Cited page?

Title it, top center: Works Cited

  • Double line spacing throughout
  • No "empty" lines between entries
  • Entries are in alphabetical order
  • Size 12 font (same as the essay)
  • Use a "hanging indent" for each entry (the second line of any entry is indented 5-7 spaces)
