Citation Tips for MLA and APA citation for high school and IB students

How do I Create the References page?

The References page is an alphabetical list of all of the sources mentioned in your paper. All sources listed must also be cited in your essay.

Follow these steps:

1)  Choose a tool to help you put the information in the right order (see tools below)

2)  For each source, identify and choose the TYPE of resource it is

3)  Fill in as much information as you can (missing some info? see here)

NOTE: Want to skip steps 1-3? Use a database! Just grab the citation given - be sure to choose "APA"

4)  Paste completed citations into your document & proofread - be sure duplication and all-caps are eliminated

5)  Alphabetize the list

6)  Reverse indent (see formatting video below)

Video: Creating a Works Cited page (7 min) Choose APA instead of MLA in the examples to create a "References" page instead.

REMEMBER: Every item on your References page MUST be actually cited within your essay. The literal meaning of "References" is, "Here are the works I've referred to in my paper."

How do I Format the Reference Page?

Title it, top center: References (no bold, italics, or quotation marks - just plain)

  • Double line spacing throughout
  • No "empty" lines between entries
  • Entries are in alphabetical order
  • Size 12 font (same as the essay)
  • Reverse indent each entry (the second line of any entry is indented 5-7 spaces)

It should look like the example HERE
